Twenty one miles, and a reason to make them.
Shawnee sits in Johnson County, on the southwest side of the metro. The shop is at 426 Miami Street in Leavenworth, 21.5 miles away in a straight line, up the Kansas side. That is a real drive and we are not going to pretend it is nothing.
Here is why Shawnee drivers make it anyway, and it has nothing to do with us being nice.
Johnson County is the densest part of this metro, which means it also has the most hail-damaged cars per square mile after a storm. When a cell works its way across Shawnee, Lenexa and Overland Park on the same evening, every shop on that side of the line takes the whole neighbourhood's worth of bookings in about forty-eight hours. The queue is not a function of how good the shop is. It is a function of how many cars were parked within ten minutes of it.
Leavenworth is outside that circle. The same storm that fills every Johnson County bay frequently leaves ours working normal hours, because the damage did not land here. Twenty one miles is the price of standing in a shorter line, and in a bad season it is the difference between next week and next month.
What has actually fallen on Shawnee.
The NOAA Storm Events Database logs 87 confirmed hail reports inside twelve miles of Shawnee between 2024 and 2026. Eighty seven reports in three years is not a run of bad luck, it is a pattern, and it is the single most useful fact on this page.
Most of the worst of it arrived in one ten minute stretch.
On 13 March 2024, between 6:50 and 7:00 in the evening, four separate reports came in from inside Shawnee's circle. A two and a half inch stone at Zarah, 6.8 miles out, at 6:50. A three and a half inch stone at Wilder, 7.5 miles out, at 6:53. Two and three quarter inches back at Zarah at 6:56, 5.3 miles out. Then two reports at seven o'clock exactly, both two and a half inches, both from Edwardsville, 5.5 miles away. Three and a half inches is a stone the size of a baseball, falling at highway speed, and it was logged three minutes after a two and a half inch report from a different direction.
Two years later, on 10 March 2026 at 5:19 in the evening, a three inch stone was reported at Pomeroy, 7.1 miles from Shawnee. Different storm, different spring, same part of the map.
The largest stone anywhere inside Shawnee's twelve mile circle in those three years was three and a half inches. That is the honest shape of this record: Shawnee does not get occasional nuisance hail. It sits in a part of the metro where a single March evening can put baseball-sized stones across four separate localities inside ten minutes.
Which is also why a walkaround estimate is a bad idea here. Damage from a stone that size is not subtle on the roof and very easy to miss on a door skin or a quarter panel, and the dents that get missed are the ones that drop off the claim.
