The steering question

YOUR INSURER RECOMMENDS.
YOU ARE THE ONE WHO PICKS.

Your carrier can recommend a shop from its network, and it may stand behind that shop's work. It cannot make the choice for you. The facility that repairs your car is your decision, and your hail claim is based on the damage to your vehicle either way.

Recommended is not required.

When you report hail damage, your carrier will usually point you toward a shop in its direct repair network. That is a recommendation, and there are real reasons a carrier makes it: those shops have agreed pricing, the paperwork moves through a familiar channel, and the carrier will often stand behind work its own network performs. None of that turns a recommendation into a requirement.

You can hear the recommendation out, thank them for it, and still name a different shop. Your adjuster works the claim the same way, and nobody has to get adversarial about it.

The recommended shop is usually a body shop.

This is the part most owners do not realize until the car is already sitting there. Direct repair networks are built mostly out of collision shops, and a collision shop repairs hail the way it repairs a fender: sand, fill, prime, repaint. Your factory paint is the one thing on the car that cannot be replaced with an equivalent, and once a panel is refinished it is refinished for good.

Paintless dent repair works the dent out from behind the panel and leaves the original finish alone. It is also faster. A body shop hail job commonly takes about three weeks. The same car through PDR is usually five to seven days. If nobody has explained that difference to you yet, that is the difference.

Here is exactly what to say.

You do not need a speech. When the adjuster names a shop, say: I have already chosen my shop, it is The Dent Barn in Leavenworth, and I would like the estimate assigned there. Then give them the number, (913) 907-5180. That is the whole conversation.

If they ask why, tell them you want paintless dent repair so your factory paint is not sanded or repainted. If they press, ask them to note in the file that you selected your own facility. You are not disputing coverage and you are not asking for anything unusual.

What picking us actually changes.

Your car goes on an Argus 3D scanner that documents every panel in one pass in about 10 minutes, which means the claim is built on a counted record instead of a walk-around. We bill your insurer directly and write the supplement ourselves when the work turns up more than the first estimate did. You are not the one on hold with the claims line.

While your car is with us you are in a free loaner. Every panel we repair carries a lifetime warranty, and your original factory paint is never sanded, filled, or repainted. We are at 426 Miami St in Leavenworth and we work the Kansas City metro on both sides of the line.

STRAIGHT
ANSWERS.

Can my insurance company make me use their shop?

A carrier can recommend a shop from its direct repair network and can tell you what it will and will not warranty, but you choose the facility that repairs your car. Say which shop you want and ask that the estimate be assigned there. If your carrier tells you otherwise, ask them to put that in writing.

Will my claim pay less if I go outside the network?

Your hail claim is based on the damage to your vehicle, not on which shop you pick. We write from a documented panel count, bill your carrier directly, and submit a supplement if more damage turns up once work starts. If your carrier has questions about the estimate, we handle that conversation instead of handing it to you.

What about the warranty my insurer offers on network repairs?

That warranty covers work performed by that network shop, and it is a fair thing to ask about. Worth knowing on our side: every panel we repair carries a lifetime warranty from us. Since paintless dent repair never refinishes the panel, there is also no repaint to fail on you later.

Is it too late to switch if my car is already at another shop?

Usually not, as long as work has not started. Call us before you authorize any repairs and we will tell you straight whether switching still makes sense for your vehicle. If the panels have already been sanded or prepped, that changes the answer.

Do I need to file the claim before I call you?

No, and plenty of owners do it the other way around. Come in for the free Argus 3D scan, see the documented count on your own car, and decide about the claim with real numbers in front of you. The scan takes about 10 minutes and does not require an open claim.
