Four point seven miles. One road.
Lansing and Leavenworth share a city limit. From the middle of Lansing to the shop door on Miami Street is 4.7 miles in a straight line, and the drive is one road.
US-73 and K-7 run together through Lansing as a single four lane highway, and they stay four lanes north. At the Leavenworth line the same pavement becomes South 4th Street. The shop sits in the 400 block of Miami, a few blocks off 4th, in a warehouse building with the bay doors facing the street. If you live over toward the river, K-5 is the other way in: it climbs up through Wolcott, takes 8th Street, comes into Leavenworth as Muncie Drive and dead ends at 4th.
Either route keeps you inside Leavenworth County and off every interstate in the state. That is a shrug on a normal Tuesday and it is the whole thing during a storm week. After a hail day the shops closest to the damage fill first and the wait gets measured in weeks rather than days. Lansing has the shortest possible version of that queue to stand in, because the hail shop is 4.7 miles up the road instead of thirty miles down it.
What has actually fallen on Lansing.
The NOAA Storm Events Database logs 22 confirmed hail reports inside twelve miles of Lansing between 2024 and 2026. Sorted by distance from town rather than by headline size, the record gets specific in a useful way.
The closest one is not a spring afternoon at all. On 18 October 2025 at 1:30 in the morning, a one inch stone was reported at Wadsworth Station, 1.7 miles from the middle of Lansing. Cars were in driveways. Nobody was watching the sky.
After that: 19 May 2025 at 3:15 in the afternoon, 1.25 inch at Leavenworth, 4.6 miles out, and four minutes later another 1.25 inch report from Fort Leavenworth, 6.7 miles out. The March 2024 outbreak reached Lansing too, but late and small, a one inch report at Leavenworth at 10:38 that night from 6.1 miles away. On 10 March 2026 the reports nearest Lansing landed at 5:31 and 5:34 in the evening, 1.25 inch each at Wolcott and Piper, both under nine miles.
The largest stone anywhere inside Lansing's twelve mile circle in those three years was three inches, reported at Pomeroy on 10 March 2026, and Pomeroy is 10.4 miles southeast. That is the honest shape of Lansing's record. The giants have been landing south of town. What lands on Lansing is one inch to an inch and three quarters.
One inch does not sound like much until somebody counts it. A stone that size, driven sideways at highway speed, will not crack your glass or fold a roof rail. It leaves a hood and a roof full of shallow dents that stay invisible until the panel is between you and a light source at the right angle. That is exactly the damage an eyeball estimate under a shop light loses.
