Route 92 west, and one bridge.
Platte City is 8.6 miles from the shop in a straight line, and that number is close to useless on its own, because the Missouri River is in between. The Centennial Bridge at Leavenworth is the only crossing of the river inside a 38 mile stretch. So the trip is a route rather than a hop, and it is better known before you plan the day than after.
The route is Route 92. Pick it up where it crosses Interstate 29 at Platte City and head west. It runs roughly ten and a half miles through Tracy and Beverly to the water, crosses on the Centennial Bridge, and on the Kansas bank becomes K-92, which runs together with US-73 and K-7 along South 4th Street through Leavenworth. Miami Street is right off 4th and the shop is in the 400 block. One highway, one bridge, and no interstate driving at all once you leave I-29.
The bridge itself is a 1955 two span arch and it is on borrowed time: a replacement is planned to open just north of it in 2029. Until then something over fourteen thousand vehicles cross it every day, most of them people doing a version of the same trip, because Platte County and Leavenworth County work as one labor market with a river down the middle of it.
Platte City's record is thinner. That changes what to look for.
It would be easy and dishonest to dress this up. The NOAA Storm Events Database has nine confirmed hail reports within twelve miles of Platte City for 2024 through 2026, and the largest of the nine is an inch and a half. Twelve miles around Bonner Springs, down on the Kansas side, produces 59 reports and a three and a half inch stone in the same window.
What Platte City does have is one report with its own name on it and one afternoon that genuinely matters. The named one first: 24 October 2024, 7:51 in the evening, a one inch stone reported at Platte City. Not a spring supercell. An October evening.
Then 19 May 2025, which is Platte County's day in this file. At 1:45 in the afternoon a 1.25 inch stone was logged at Kansas City International Airport, 3.8 miles from Platte City. At 1:54 and again at 1:59 the reports came from Smithville, out at eleven miles. The line stayed alive and kept moving west: 3:15 in the afternoon, 1.25 inch at Leavenworth, 8.6 miles from Platte City, and four minutes later a 1.25 inch report at Fort Leavenworth. Same system, ninety minutes apart, on both sides of the river.
The March 2024 outbreak that worked over Wyandotte and Johnson County panels barely reached Platte County at all. The nearest report from that day inside Platte City's twelve miles came at 10:38 that night: one inch, at Leavenworth.
Inch class hail is the kind people talk themselves out of. It will not fold your roof or crack your glass. It stipples the horizontal panels, the hood, the roof and the trunk lid, with dozens of shallow dents you cannot see standing up on a cloudy day and an adjuster's walkaround will not fully count. That is exactly what the scanner exists for, and exactly the damage that turns up as a number at trade in three years later.
