Without insurance, you pay what the repair costs, and hail repair costs the same whether a carrier pays or you do. In the Kansas City metro, most hail repairs run $1,500 to $7,000: roughly $1,500 to $3,000 for light damage on one or two panels, $3,000 to $7,000 for dents across the hood, roof and several panels, and $7,000 to $15,000 and up for severe damage. Paying yourself has one advantage a claim does not. You choose which panels to fix.
Below is how a cash hail repair is priced, where your car is likely to land, and how to keep the bill to the panels you care about.
When you are paying for hail repair yourself
Hail damage to your own car is a comprehensive loss. People end up paying for it themselves in three situations.
- No comprehensive coverage. Hail falls under comprehensive. If your policy does not carry it, as with a liability-only policy, there is nothing to claim. Your declarations page shows which coverages you have.
- Damage under the deductible. Your carrier pays the approved repair above your comprehensive deductible. If the repair is close to or below that number, a claim pays little or nothing.
- Choosing not to claim. Some owners would rather pay than add a claim, or want to fix only part of the damage. If rates are the worry, read does a hail claim raise your rates first.
One caution if you are still undecided. Standard auto policy language lets the insurer inspect the damage before it is repaired. If there is any chance you will claim, call your agent before the repair starts, not after it is done.
Once you know you are paying, the next question is how the number is built.

Hail is priced panel by panel from a damage map, not as a flat rate. The same four things set the price whether you pay or a carrier does.
- Dent count. It drives the price first. Forty dents and four hundred dents on the same car are different jobs.
- Dent size and depth. Dents are sized against coins: dime, nickel, quarter and up. Bigger and deeper costs more, and oversized dents are priced on their own.
- Which panels. Hoods and roofs take the worst of a storm. Aluminum panels, braced areas and tight corners take longer than an open steel door.
- Access. If trim, lights or the headliner have to come off to reach the back of a panel, that labor is part of the price.
Paint condition sits on top of all four. PDR works while the paint is intact. A panel with cracked or chipped paint needs conventional repair, which costs more.
That is why two cars from the same storm can carry very different numbers, even parked side by side. To see where yours might land, start with the ranges.
Kansas City ranges for hail repair without insurance
These are the ranges published in our hail damage repair cost guide, and they hold whether you pay or a carrier pays.
- Light damage, a few dozen small dents across one or two panels: roughly $1,500 to $3,000.
- Moderate damage, dents across the hood, roof and several panels: roughly $3,000 to $7,000.
- Severe damage, hundreds of dents, large or creased dents, glass or trim involved: $7,000 to $15,000 and up.
Most metro repairs land between $1,500 and $7,000. A storm that left a few dozen shallow dents on one panel sits at the bottom. A storm that put large dents across the hood and roof of a big vehicle sits near the top, and can run past it.
A range is not your number. Your number comes from a count of your dents on your panels. If you are weighing whether light damage is worth fixing at all, read is minor hail damage worth fixing.
The ranges also explain why the repair method matters so much when the money is yours.
Why PDR is the cheaper way to pay for hail
Paintless dent repair is the route that keeps a cash hail job within reach, because of what it leaves out.
- No paint. No sanding, priming, spraying or blending into the next panel. The factory finish stays.
- No parts. Dented panels are repaired, not replaced.
- Less time. Typical PDR repair is 5-7 days. A body-shop repair adds steps, and every step adds labor.
On hail with intact paint, PDR usually costs far less than replacing and repainting the same panels. It also keeps the original paint, so there is no color match to worry about later. PDR vs a body shop walks through the comparison.
With the method settled, the last lever you control is scope.
Partial repairs: fix the panels you care about
With a claim, the insurer pays to repair the damage it approves. Paying yourself, you decide what gets fixed. That is the real advantage of the cash route.
- Hood and roof only. These two panels usually take the most hail, and the hood is the one you look at every day.
- The side you see. Some owners fix the hood and the driver's side and leave the rest.
- One panel at a time. Fix the hood now and the roof later, when it suits your budget.
A partial repair is priced the same way as a full one: per panel, by dent count and size. With every panel documented, you can line the panels up and decide where the money goes.
What to ask for in a cash quote
When the money is yours, the quote should be easy to read. Ask for:
- A price per panel, so you can choose which panels to fix.
- The removal labor, such as a headliner or trim, shown on its own line.
- Any panel that is not PDR work, named, with the reason.
- The repair time, so you can plan around being without the car.
